How to Start a Website For Free

Something that I did way back in ’97 was make a lot of pages on free web page hosts such as Geocities and AOL. My pages were mainly music pages that I would code in HTML with notepad, lol. They were kind of lame but it got me addicted to the internet. This post is going to take you through the ways to start a website for free.

Today, there are many places to make your own website for free. Sites such as wordpress.com, blogger.com, and wix.com make it very easy to get started with your own website. Let’s go through each one and show some pro’s and con’s of each free service.

  1. wordpress.com – WordPress is one of the most popular blogging sites used. They also make available their program so you can use it on your own domain. You can download it at wordpress.org. Don’t think that since it’s a blog platform that it’s not right for you, because many people use wp (wordpress) as their Content Management System (CMS) for non-blog sites.
  2. blogger.com – Blogger, or blogspot, is another free blogging website that is available to use for making your own web site. Google bought blogspot a while back so you can be rest assured that it’s not going anywhere soon and will be very reliable.
  3. wix.com – Wix is relatively new and is a very cool site to build your website. The people at Wix have created a web site builder tool that lets you easily create fancy flash web sites. Have a try at it. I know you’ll be amazed at how nice of a site you’ll create in no time.

With just these 3 sites, you can make a website fit for a business in no time. All of the sites mentioned offer a way to grow. When you feel confident to buy your own domain name you can take the site with you or forward your domain to their site. We’ll go over this at a different date.

  • Do you know of another free site to create a website?
  • Do you have any questions, comments about the listed websites?
  • Are you having trouble with one of the sites?

Leave a comment below and I’ll help you every way I can.
